Policy Center offers exceptional opportunities for recent undergraduate and graduate students. As a volunteer or intern you will be able to take what you have learned in university and use it to make a practical contribution towards the prevention and resolution of armed conflict. Opportunities generally last 3–6 months depending on the location, and provide individuals with a rewarding, hands-on experience.

Based in Africa, the intern will undertake research and draft reports and other forms of shorter publication that explore and propose ways to prevent or mitigate deadly conflict in Africa, including consideration of socio-political, economic, legal and governance issues.
Responsibilities
  • Conducts extensive field research into prevailing issues in Africa, including – where relevant – consideration of security, economic, socio-political, legal and governance issues;
  • Provides written analyses and semi-structured interviews – in scientific fashion – of the risks and origins of armed conflict in the region in the form of detailed reports and briefing papers for publication as well as the animation of our social media (such as Q&As, podcasts and so on…);
  • Proposes policy recommendations (Policy Brief) for political representatives, civil society and other stakeholders at the national as well as regional and international levels aimed at preventing, mitigating or resolving conflict;
  • Represents Policy Center at events and in the media – locally, nationally and internationally as appropriate;
  • Provides support to the research Director and promote the Policy Center on social media, in the region and globally.
Requirements
  • Post-graduate qualification in international relations, political science, social sciences or other relevant field of academic study;
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in French and English;
  • Strong research and analytical skills;
  • Extensive knowledge of security issues and public policies in Africa, and experience of living and working in the region;
  • Personal experience of living in Africa (good knowledge of the local language, customs and travel in the region);
  • A network of governmental and non-governmental, official, media and civil society contacts in the region;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including public presentation skills;
  • Experience of working successfully within a team as well as the ability to work independently.
